Broward County School Board Resolution
American Muslim Heritage Month
On May 2nd 2017, the School Board of Broward County proclaimed May as American Muslim Heritage month. It is supported by the Diversity Committee, the Broward County Council of Muslim Students Association, the Department of Diversity and Prevention, and the Human Relations Council.
Because Broward country has a rapidly growing Muslim population in our schools, the School Board and the Department of Diversity and Prevention, decided that it is crucial for Muslim minorities to feel safe and included.
A focus group was initiated by Tom Albano and Marion Williams, who in collaboration with Naima Khan-Ghany, a teacher at McArthur High School, brought students together to share experiences, concerns and ideas to foster an inclusive environment in our public schools.
At this point, a few schools had already started an MSA club and Mrs. Khan-Ghany’s vision was to mobilize these schools, bringing them together and spreading the establishment of other MSAs.
With countless meetings, and unwavering support from parents, McArthur High School held its first Annual Award and Recognition Ceremony where the Broward County School Council of MSAs was launched. This includes representatives from 12 schools. These schools worked tirelessly to create a presentation for the School Board on May 2nd where history was made when the Resolution was read. The community showed unconditional support by representing our heritage in large numbers, from parents, support groups, students, organizations and teachers.
The BCS Council of MSAs will host an iftar and community dinner on May 31st at 6:30 pm at McArthur High School. We are also working with the Diversity, Prevention and Intervention department to create a resource list of organizations which can provide social services for our Muslim students and their families in Broward County. McArthur High school is in the process of developing a handout that will be made available to all staff and administration regarding “10 facts to know about Muslims”
Schools are urged to plan activities throughout the month of May, some of which include,
Hijab-a-thon, henna, Movie “Prince among Slaves” and Art Exhibit. For a complete list contact Naima Khan-Ghany at 954-298-4061.
